The Settlers Glen iron-enhanced sand filter will remove a significant amount of phosphorous (118 pounds!) per year from an area of Stillwater that flows to McKusick Lake and the St. Croix River, both of which are impaired for excess phosphorous. Too much phosphorous can lead to algal and aquatic plant blooms in freshwater lakes. It will operate by pumping water from the nearby stream during rain storms into the existing storm water pond.
